Our Story: Keeping Doris Buffett's Dream Alive

The Sunshine Baseball League is committed to developing character through youth baseball. Encouraging kids to believe at an early age that going to college is a serious option for them is a major part of the league's mission.

Doris Buffett, known as "The Sunshine Lady," passed away in 2020. We continue her dream of making summer baseball accessible to all area kids—especially those whose families can't afford it.

Doris helped build the beautiful Sunshine Ballpark in a Fredericksburg neighborhood to give kids a safe place to have fun and receive mentoring from coaches who are positive role models.

"They learn the game while they learn life lessons," said former pro player Ernie Baker, who works with the league. "I love to see kids learning to do team things. The whole idea is to keep them busy, happy and learning something. They won't be as likely to fall prey to bad characters."

Heat Index Guidelines

Player safety is our top priority. We follow American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for activity during extreme heat.

White Zone (65-80°)

No restrictions. Normal play and practice.

Yellow Zone (81-98°)

Extra hydration breaks and frequent substitutions encouraged.

Orange Zone (99-105°)

Catchers limited to 2 innings. Frequent breaks required during practice.

Red Zone (106-115°)

Game times reduced. 10u games: 1:45, 18u games: 2:00. Practice time reduced.

Black Zone (115°+)

All games and practices canceled until heat index falls below 115°.

Note: Heat index adjusts throughout the day. We add 2° on sunny/still days, subtract 2° on cloudy/windy days. Check social media for real-time updates.
